8 Steps to Unwinding

Here are 8 tips to unwinding:

1. Before running your bath water decide what’s going in the bath (apart from you and a rubber duck!). The look, feel and scent of your bath are very important, especially when you’re looking for deep relaxation. Choose whatever appeals to you. This will vary, depending on your mood and needs.

2. Next, brush your skin all over to exfoliate and improve circulation. Use a cactus bristle body brush, loofah mitt or hemp glove. Brush firmly over dry skin, using long, sweeping movements working up from your feet and always brushing towards the heart.

3. Run yourself a warm bath, not too hot, as oils can’t be absorbed through hot skin and add a generous amount of sea salts, bubble bath or several drops of essential oil. You could scatter fresh herbs or rose petals into your bath, or put them in a muslin bag and infuse in the water.

4. Make the bathroom dark, and light an aromatherapy burner filled with your chosen relaxing essential oil, or an aromatherapy candle.

5. While sitting in the bath, spritz your face with cold rosewater, and then lie back for as long as it takes you to relax. Focus on the smells and the flickering light of the candle.

6. Before you get out of the bath add a teaspoon of essential oil to the water. Coat yourself with the oily water and when you are really ready, step out of the bath.

7. Wrap yourself in a towel or bathrobe and sit on the edge of the bath or toilet. Take a jar of relaxing foot cream and massage it into your feet. Apply a refreshing treatment cream or gel for the legs, from your ankles to your knees.

8. You should be calm and drowsy by now. Go and lie down on your bed, making sure you’ve unplugged the phone! The aromatic treatments will have soaked in and drawn you into a meditative, relaxed state.
