How to avoid exercise injuries
- Do plan to exercise three times a week for at least 30 minutes at a time.
- Do get your muscles ready by stretching and limbering up before exercising. Most sports injuries are caused by an improper warm-up.
- Do allow time for a cool-down. This prevents sudden changes in your heart rate that can cause light-headedness or fainting.
- Don't exercise outdoors during the hottest part of the day. The best time is early morning or late afternoon.
- Do drink water before and during exercise. Avoid sugary or alcoholic beverages.
- Don't take salt tablets, even if you perspire a lot. They can be harmful. The amount of salt lost during a workout is minimal and will easily be replaced with your next meal.
- Do wear layers during cold weather so you can peel them off as you heat up.
