Great BIG Slimming Fibs

You could be overweight because you believe some of these fibs!!

  1. The faster you lose weight, the better your slimming diet.
    • You couldn't be more wrong, doctors don't like crash diets and usually recommend about two lbs per week.
  2. Dieters should take extra vitamins every day.
    • If you stick to a nutritionally balanced diet you should not need any extra vitamins.
  3. Exercise rather than dieting will make you slim.
    • The truth is that exercise is not going to reduce weight by itself, to any noticeable extent.
  4. Steam baths are a good way of slimming quickly.
    • Steaming makes you perspire.  You could lose 6 or 7lbs - of water- in a Turkish bath but you needed it or it wouldn't have been there in the first place and you will drink it back into your system while your fat remains.
  5. Toast is less fattening than bread.
    • If you believe that you'll believe anything.  Toast may look less bulky but you don't destroy calories by browning them!!!
  6. Middle age spread is inevitable.
    • Of course it isn't!  People tend to become less active as they grow older but continue eating as usual.  This means they burn less fuel and the excess get laid down as fat.  Many people give up exercise altogether around the age of 45 for no reason except they think they are past               it!!
  7. There are other ways of losing weight besides dieting.
    • Exercise machines don't make you lose weight only firm the existing flesh and muscles.
  8. It's unsafe for children and young people to diet.
    • On the contrary, it's an excellent thing, as long as they use a well balance diet.
  9. Dieting is expensive.
    • There is no reason why it should be.  If you continued to eat your meals with the family and cut down on your starchy and sugary foods your food bill would be less wouldn't it?
  10. Missing breakfast will help your diet.
    • No, it won't.  It will usually mean that you'll be picking at snacks all morning and eating more for lunch than you should.
  11. You must eat special foods.
    • You can buy exotic slimming foods if you like but they are not recommended or necessary             following our diets.
  12. Margarine has fewer calories than butter.
    • They both have the same.
  13. Calories in drinks aren't as fattening as those in food!!!
    • Oh yes they are!!  Because they are always extra to meals they are worse!
  14. Dieting can't slim down the bust.
    • Dieting slims down any over weight area of the body with one fairly common exception, if your legs are thick set below the knee this is usually hereditary so you'll have to learn to live              with them.
  15. You should restrict liquids to lose weight.
    • Certainly not - but do restrict the drinks which heap on the calories, alcohol, milk and fruitjuice.
  16. Thin people naturally eat less.
    • Many thin people actually eat huge amounts of food but their bodies burn it quickly and don't store unused calories as fat.
  17. As long as an overweight person feels well, there is no need to reduce their weight.
    • Overweight is always a health hazard, whether those extra lbs worry you or not.  Every   organ in the body is working harder than it should to carry the extra burden.  Excess weight aggravates conditions like arthritis.
  18. Your stomach shrinks if you go on a diet.
    • Stomachs never shrink!! If you permanently reduce your food intake, your stomach adapts to the new amount and you will eventually not need as much food in order to feel full.
  19. Grapefruit helps to lose weight.
    • It's a popular fallacy that grapefruit burns up body fat.  The truth is that there is no food that will dissolve body fat.
  20. You need to eat sugar for an active life.
    • Wrong.  No-one actually needs sugar - the body makes its own out of the natural foods and can safely be eliminated from any weight reducing or indeed normal eating programme.
  21. Slimming pills are a good way to get your weight down.
    • Good eating habits don't come out of a pillbox.  A permanent change in diet is usually what you need to become slim and stay that way.
  22. Without food you would die in a few days.
    • No you wouldn't.  The longest period anyone has gone without food is 382 days by 25 year old Angus Barbiere of Fife, who lived on tea, coffee and soda water and vitamins in hospital from 1965-66.  This was done under strict medical supervision and doctors warn that normally such ordeals would damage the heart.
  23. Yoghurt is slimming.
    • Not always.  Plain unsweetened yoghurt has about the same calorie as milk.  Flavoured and sweetened, it has about twice as many.  There are the low calorie yoghurts but always be careful to read the carton thoroughly, they may quote 50 calories for 75g and you will be    reading off tub containing 100g also they may 'kid' you by printing low fat, usually this means high in sugar or even the other way around!
  24. If you stay on a diet all the time you will lose weight until you disappear!?!
    • Keep dieting and you will go down to your natural weight and your new eating habits should keep you at this weight.  It depends what you mean by 'dieting' though, if by non-sensible methods it is possible to go below your natural body weight.  At  Super Slim we would not allow this and would insist that your intake is increased until such time as you stabilise - this, we would hasten to add is a very rare occurrence!
  25. Physical exercise are an essential part of any slimming programme.
    • If you really don't like exercise (though it can be great fun) you can still lose weight successfully.
  26. There is no hurry about starting a diet.
    • The longer you leave it, the worse it becomes.  It takes slightly longer to lose weight as you become older and very often that 7lb you wanted to lose may have become a stone by the time you are ready to lose it.
  27. It's fattening to drink with meals.
    • A healthy body will get rid of any excess liquid.  This applies to liquid taken at any time.
  28. Overeating is due to lack of moral fibre.
    • This is a sanctimonious, usually slim persons point of view.  Overeating is not only done by overweight people as we all know only too well.  It can be caused by psychological problems though.
  29. It's easier to gain weight than to lose.
    • Not so, thin people have a much harder time trying to gain than dieters do trying to lose.
  30. Being fat has its advantages.
    • The only one I can think of is lasting a bit longer on a desert island without food.  Any others???
