Test Your Skin Type

Most of us already know our skin type (dry, normal/combination or oily).  But for those who may not be quite sure, and for the surprising number who think they have dry skin when, in fact, it is perfectly normal - or just a bit sensitive - here is a basic rule-of-thumb test for determining what sort of skin you really have.

  1. Before the test, cleanse skin and remove any excess oil from the surface, then wait about half an hour.
  2. Place a piece of adhesive tape (about 4-5" long) across cheeks and nose.
  3. Remove it and examine carefully.  If it is covered in flaky white particles, your skin is dry.  If there are no     flaky particles but a wet-looking sheen, your skin is oily.  If, however, the tape shows both a degree of     flakiness (from the cheek area) and sheen (from the nose), then your skin is normal/combination.
